About U-Hang

Art Gene’s U-Hang Exhibition Programme ran from 2004 -2016, and was an opportunity for artists to experiment with new concepts, test theories or develop their practice in other new ways.

This was done by installing artworks in and about the public areas of the former Technical College building that Art Gene shares with the community council, and gave our broad local audience the opportunity to experience visual art in surprising places. U-Hang helped Art Gene to learn about and celebrate the remarkable historic building they once rescued from dereliction.

In 2014, Art Gene invited visual artist Ruth Pringle to take over curating U-Hang, changing how artists were selected – inviting artists based on the themes in their work, and how this fed into Art Gene’s wider research – as well as offering more advice and assistance for artists developing installations within what was in many ways a difficult space.

While U-Hang is no longer a part of Art Gene’s regular programme, it’s spirit has been carried forward through our residency programmes, where artists are encouraged to explore the town and surroundings, meet the community and ‘report back’ to the space. Its legacy can also been seen in Digital U, our online exhibitions programme that began in 2017.
