It’s with great sadness that we heard of the death of Julie Hammerton this week. Known to everyone in Barrow as the Band Director of the Barracudas, Julie had a long association with the carnival tradition in Barrow and Furness.
The Barracudas award-winning brand of choreography, music and elaborate costumes represented Barrow all over the country – London’s Notting Hill Carnival, the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee and the Womad festival to name a few.
We in Art Gene owe Julie a huge debt. She was one of three founding directors of our company in 2002, alongside Maddi Nicholson and Stuart Bastik. In the late 1990s, Julie made a fundamental contribution to providing a viable new use for the then derelict Old Technical College, helping to protect and enhance what is now Barrow’s much loved Nan Tait Centre. We extend our condolences to Julie’s family and friends.
