The Digital U presents a pertinent recent piece from artist Rebecca Chesney. Chesney presents for this online exhibition the moving image work, View From Here, and invites the viewer to hear from others their experience of recent worldwide events, accompanied by the view through her own window onto a fading evening sky.
The reverberation of these collaged elements: stories, voices and languages – brings together a sonnet of distinct perspectives through a shared experience. The untranslated narratives strings together a common sentiment, the universality of our experience. The isolation, the breaking of habits, for the first time in modern experience the world stopped.
Posing questions to her friends, family and colleagues, Chesney gathered women’s voices speaking out about their experiences during these extraordinary times, asking the question “How are you?”
Rebecca Chesney’s View From Here is part of the ongoing Digital U: Extreme Views Pt. 2 exhibition series, exploring collisions of art and environment.
View From Here was commissioned by the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts in El Paso, USA as part of a virtual exhibition “El Balcón” curated in collaboration with Proyecto Changarrito and Azul Arena.
“All recorded in April 2020, these brief soundbites in different languages reveal personal thoughts, observations and concerns. Love, loss and sadness, isolation and loneliness are all mentioned, alongside expressions of thankfulness and hope.”
