Allotment Soup: the Isle of Walney Community Growing Space
Mill Lane, Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 3XX (opposite the fire station)

What Is a Hugel mound?

Hugel mounds derive from the German word ‘hügelkultur’, the literal translation for a hügel mound is “hill culture”. The design was originally pioneered by Sepp Holzer, a farmer and international consultant for natural agriculture.

How will it help growing?

A Hugel mound is effectively a raised bed, filled with rotten wood and materials that would otherwise go to waste to create a highly fertile soil. A range of different crops can be planted directly into the Hugel mound providing more sustainable growing space, while supporting the site to retain moisture, emit carbon, aerate the soil, and supply nutrients as the mound decays over the years.

This will be a hands on workshop as we create the layers of compostable materials to make the Hugel mound. See full details about the day below.
