Art Gene is delighted to announce the Extreme Views Artists in Residence are Owen Griffiths and Katie Anderson, who will be spending time in Barrow over the coming months as they explore the town and get to know the community.
Owen Griffiths is an artist based in Swansea, whose social practice and research is connected to land use, urbanism and community food systems and ideas of challenging normative urban design. Owen has been invited to Barrow-in-Furness to explore his work around community land projects and the future of our cities and environments.
Katie Anderson is a visual artist based in South West Scotland. An interest in people, places, materials and collaborative practice drives her work, both alongside and as part of communities, which has its foundations in a sense of place. Katie was selected on the strength of her work with communities.
“As artist in residence for Art Gene’s Extreme Views, I’m looking forward to getting to know the area, uncovering some of the detail and everyday stories of Barrow in Furness, and playfully enquiring into relationships and connections to the wider environment surrounding the town. I’m hoping to bring my own approach and personal interests over the course of the next few months, as a starter for conversation and exchange.”

Also launching this month, Art Gene’s online exhibition space ‘Digital U’ will exhibit work by six artists whose work explores the collision of art and environment in the digital age. The artists selected from an open call by returning Guest Curator Alejandro Ball are: Angela Eames, Jennifer Katanyoutanant, David Lunt and Vi Trinh. Alejandro Ball will select two further artists to exhibit who will be announced at a later date.
Kicking off Part 2 of our Digital U: Extreme Views online exhibition series, Art Gene is delighted to exhibit the work of artist Angela Eames. Eames’ video series entitled ‘Cycle’ probes into the natural cycles or loops of life via different material elements – a window on our world; birth and decay, fracture and growth and time in an unceasing rotation of night and day. While we are the makers of our own doom, the reality of nature and the flow of time is that nothing is forever. Eames captures this downward spiral in an enticing aesthetic, which is sure to grip the viewer. ‘Cycle’ by Angela Eames is available to view now.
About the artists selected to exhibit on Digital U, Alejandro wrote:
“Technology has become an ingrained steeple of society, and integral to how the west socially progresses. Thus, in my selection process I sought to find artists that showed this technical integration in their practice and projects – they know the reality of the situation – technology is here to stay.”
