Louise Adkins, Extreme Views Artist-in-Residence, 2018 – 2019
My practice includes performance, text, drawing and film. My work investigates the relationship between culture and historic narrative. It is concerned with recent histories, collecive and narrative memory, historicity and the documentation of momentous events. I often work with specialist interest groups and communities to develop performances utilizing their skills, knowledge and specialist histories. These partnerships allow me to access expert groups whilst developing new audiences and engagement in the work. I work with collections, archives, libraries and heritage sites. I am interested in the performative possibilities of these sites and histories and the narrative potential inherent in re-visioning them.
I am very pleased to be working with Art Gene on the Extreme Views project, developing work in response to the coastal landscape and its history. I am excited by the multiple histories and stories of the region and look forward to working with the Art Gene team and wider community of Barrow.

‘Notes for a Performance – Weather Permitting’

As artist in resident on the Extreme Views programme Louise Adkins has developed performance, audio and text work’s titled ‘Notes for a Performance – Weather Permitting’. This work responds to archival research and site-specific field work into the proximity of the geographic coastline to the mountainous landscape, tracking the triangulation and mapping routes between Black Combe Fell, Hodbarrow Point and Birkrigg Common. The performance, transmitted via amateur radio, acts as a meta-narrative that give voice(s) to a collective memory of a landscape and its people, interrogating the industrial and typographic heritage of Barrow–in-Furness and surrounding South Lake District region.
Working with radio operators Mark Wickenson, Nick Gregory and Chris Leviston from Furness Amateur Radio Society (FARS) ‘Notes for a Performance – Weather Permitting’ was performed and transmitted from the summit trig point of Black Combe fell to the trig points at Hodbarrow Point and Birkrigg Common on Sunday 17th March 2019. Accompanying the performance is a limited-edition publication, published by Wild Pansy Press University of Leeds presenting the original performance script in text and braille format alongside a compendium of performance documentation. Extracts from the live performance will be presented as part of the opening of the Extreme Views Exhibition on the 4th April 2019.
